Choosing a niche for blogging is the first and the most critical step. Why I say it is vital is because you cannot undo this step. Once you have chosen the road and started marching on it, it is almost impossible to take a U-turn.
Keyword research plays an important role in choosing a niche for blogging. We have already discussed that keyword is essential for SEO. It is imperative to focus on keywords while maintaining a natural flow of writing.
In this article, I will be focusing on finding the best niche for blogging using free tools.
Generally, there is a confusion on two points:
Shall I write about something for which I am passionate?
I see he writes about XYZ. He is making big money. Shall I start writing on it?
Which path should we follow?
Let us first understand what is required to find out a perfect niche for your blog that pays. 🙂
1- Your Interest:
Your interest and passion is the hygiene factor. It has to be there. You cannot blog about anything which does not interest you. Only the topics on which you have full authority should be chosen.
You may love dogs. Check out your love for it. Can you enjoy talking about dogs persistently for ten years? If yes, Bingo!
No! It is still not final. But, It has passed the first level test.
So, what if you don’t know what your passion is?
Experiment! Start writing on something that you like. Be sure that you actually are passionate about it. Otherwise, you may end up wasting time on random topics. Still, if you are not able to pursue it, try something else.
This method is called choosing by elimination. It may take time, but it will help you find out what you don’t like. Try, try, try and you will find out your passion one day.
2- Search Volume
For example, let us say you are passionate about dogs and can talk day and night about them. How can that help you? Well! You may advise your readers on how to take the best care of their golden retriever.
Now, if your readers find your tricks helpful then the next time when their puppy is not eating anything they will visit your blog for answers.
Google Keyword Planner
Google Keyword Planner is an official product of Google. It gives traffic estimation of your targeted keywords. It also helps in finding more relevant and related keywords for your niche.
What is Keyword research:
The process of finding out which “words” are searched most on the search engine is called keyword research.
Why is it important?
The more a word is searched, means it is an issue that people wants to know about more. People are exploring left right and corner to get information on this particular word.
How to decipher which keywords are precious?
Create an account on Google AdWords, go to tools and click on Keyword Planner. Go to the Keyword planner and write the broader topic of your blog.
In the Keyword Planner, write your idea and click on “Get Ideas.”
So you can see that Golden Retriever is a popular search term with “1.5 million” average monthly searches. So here is the good news! People are searching for queries related to the golden retriever, and this is a good start.
Keyword by relevance
Google gives search details for the terms it considers relevant to your searched item. With the Keyword (by relevance) you can get a fair idea that Rottweiler is, even more, searched keyword. But look at the suggested bid (31.82) which is lower than golden retriever’s (62.81). Higher the suggested bid, easier it is to convert the traffic into paying customers, and higher will be your affiliate income.
It gives you a hint regarding the commercial intent of the keyword. The more, the better. It is not at all advisable to switch your niche to a high bidding keyword, but you may undoubtedly zero on a better one amongst the related topics.
Like, looking at the figure above you may see that people are more concerned about their golden retriever puppies. Marketers are betting more money for Golden Retriever rescue term, but at the same time, competition is medium.
It is easier for a new blog to rank for a low competition keyword. It is recommended to go for a keyword where competition is weak.
Apart from Google Keyword Planner, there are other paid tools like Long Tail Pro. These tools calculate a simple 0-100 score based on a proprietary algorithm.
Ad Group Ideas
Switching on to the other tab called “Ad Group Ideas” can give you few more suggestions that might have been skipped. This step is more from the monetisation point of view. This is the Adwords competition.
The crux of the matter is while considering keyword for your blog keep in mind that the:
Volume Search: should be higher than at least 1000 searches per month.
Competition: should be low
Suggested bid: Above Rs 50 or $1
You can also check on Google trends for the popularity of the searched term over a period.
Here you can compare the popularity of various words and sort your search results according to time, and region.
As we discussed earlier, that more the bid amount, higher would be the competition and vice-a-versa. So, here is a trade-off. Either you can choose an easy to convert niche where it could be challenging to rank high. Or you may select a low competition niche with a decent bidding amount. I would recommend the later one.
My 1st priority is low competition, and then I will choose the highest bidding option amongst them. By this, I end up picking “Golden Retriever Puppies” as the blog title.
Just like you have your priority list while choosing your life partner, you need to have one here as well. My recommendation would be:
Choose amongst the blog niches where you believe you have the competent authority and interest. Choosing a profitable domain with low interest cannot take you far. Persistence differentiates a successful blogger from others. Persistence comes when you have the zeal for your topic, and you are always dying to share your unique experiences with others.
Do not choose profitability over your interest.
I hope you find this guide helpful. Do let me know in comments what strategy you follow to decide your blog niche or even post title.
